This was 28 years ago almost to the day, but hasn't been documented elsewhere, so here it is.
In 1986 i had a look at a well near Ashley Road in Epsom.
The thick concrete slab was lifted with a car jack and blocks of wood wedged underneath. A candle was lowered down which didn't go out, so i left the top open a couple of inches to allow air to circulate and returned two weeks later with four 20 foot electron ladders.
Spotted a date of 1773 carved into the wall and several old bottles were neatly perched on some of the notches.
